On October 16, Southwest students joined together to support our Varsity girl’s soccer team as they faced off against our rival school at sectionals. Tension was higher than usual, as this was the third time the Southwest and Washburn teams faced off this season with each winning one of the two games they had played so far. This specific game was an away match so Washburn did have the home-field advantage.
Though tension ran high, each team’s defense seemed to run higher as the first quarter passed with the score staying at 0-0, as only a few goals had been attempted. The second half of the game seemed to be playing out the same way with only 10 minutes left and the score remaining the same. Shocking to both teams and devastating to Southwest, at 8 minutes and 40 seconds, Washburn managed to score on our team, leading them through the next round of sectionals.
Southwest Soccer team member Ruby Johnson (‘26) said, “I had a really good time this season and we worked really hard and played really well as a team. We set goals for ourselves even when we might not have made them, and left it all out on the field. Tough loss to Washburn to end the season but we worked really hard all season.”
Elise McMillen (‘27) said, “We had a really good season and grew together as a team throughout. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to reach our goal of making it to State due to a tough loss to Washburn in the second round of sectionals. We gave it our best but came up short. The loss stung and I feel especially bad for the seniors on the team.”
“Both teams were aggressive but Washburn had a nice goal and we were close, but couldn’t get one back,” Olive Mikkelson (‘27) said.
Though Washburn managed to pull out ahead of Southwest, the game was impressive and competitive and the team hopes to take them on next year.
