Homecoming is here! From Monday, September 22nd, all the way through the Homecoming Dance on the 27th, Southwest students will have repped their endless Laker spirit all week long! Students have gotten decked out in gear for Spirit Week, and are looking forward to the Homecoming Parade & Pep Fest on Friday, the 26th. Shortly after at 6:00 pm, the Southwest Stadium student section will be packed with kids from all grades, supporting our varsity Lakers football team as they play against the Roosevelt Teddies. The next day, Southwest students will be getting ready, going out to dinner, and taking photos at 4:30 before making their way over to the Homecoming Dance at 7:00 pm in the commons.
Homecoming Week isn’t just about the dance. It’s a tradition that brings the entire Southwest community together. With spirit days, pep rallies, and the big football game, these fun activities give students a chance to create long-lasting memories and show their Laker pride, especially during Spirit Week!
Many spirit week themes are more controversial than others and some students choose not to participate at all. “People who don’t participate in spirit week need a reality check. They think they’re cooler than they are and they’re actually bums,” said Ava Murphy (‘27). “Not having school spirit doesn’t make you cool,” she added. With that in mind, be sure to stay connected with our Southwest socials for all things Homecoming, including the spirit week themes!
Another topic worthy of discussion is the theme for seniors at the dance. This year, seniors will be decked out in rugged cowboy attire as they display the theme Wild West! Students were waiting anxiously to hear about what the theme would be between options like Under the Sea, Rio, and Disco. Eventually, the student council, along with the student body, made their decision. When we asked Myles Niemasz (‘26), for his thoughts on the theme, he replied, “I’m a big fan. I think it’s better than Under the Sea. It has more creative stuff.”
For many students, this will be their first Homecoming! Freshmen are waiting in anticipation and excitement to experience their first high school dance. “I hope that it’s good,” said Emily Scott (‘29). “I hope that we can mosh to it and that they play ‘Promiscuous.’”
Homecoming week is about more than just themed outfits and a dance. It’s about celebrating the traditions, energy, and community that make Southwest special. Whether you’re cheering in the stands, walking in the parade, or showing off your moves at the dance, every student plays a part in creating the memories that will last long after the week is over. So get involved, show your spirit, and make this Homecoming one to remember, Lakers!
