On Monday, October 14th at 7:00 PM, Southwest Choir will perform songs they’ve been furiously working on this quarter, based on the theme “Stars and the Moon.” Pieces performed at the fall concert will span multiple genres, from pop to soul to jazz to folk.
Southwest’s choir director, Bryan Fisher, said “[Ad Astra] was the deciding factor in choosing the theme. I found a piece that all choirs could do at all different levels. I wanted a guide, and I love the idea of the Moon. It can be astrological, it can be [about] nighttime, it can be ocean waves in the moonlight.”
Fisher wants students to go to the concert. He says students should go “to support each other. If you come, you might hear something you’ve never heard before. Not just a song you’ve never heard before, but the way singers sound together in a choir, it’s fun if you’ve never experienced it live.”
I asked Fisher about how the freshmen were handling their first concert at Southwest: “They seem a little nervous, but they’re into it. I have a real positive vibe from them that they want to be good. They’re working tremendously hard.”
All choirs will perform Ad Astra, an inspiring piece with Latin and English that means “to the stars.” The freshman choir, Cantar, will perform Blue Moon, an upbeat soul joint. The sophomore choir, Coro Voce, will perform The Moon and the Sun, a rhythmic song with emotional lyrics. Southwest Honor Choir, an underclassmen ensemble, will perform Cool Moon, a modern a capella piece with lush harmony. Chamber Singers, the highest level ensemble at Southwest, will perform Moon River, from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, followed by the pop song Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Southwest Singers, the upperclassmen choir, will perform Bright Morning Stars, a folk song, followed by Apple Tree, a syncopated piece with rich chords. A professional choir mentoring Southwest Singers, Cantus, will perform Traumlicht. Their eight-part harmonies will blow your mind!
We promise you’ll be starstruck. Catch you there!
