Last month, with the Southwest student body packed into the gym for the pep fest, Spanish teacher Profe Lundberg won the student-voted staff spirit award! She showed up every day of the week with strikingly on-point costumes. Her most eye-catching outfit was on Laker Out day on Friday, donning a Purple outfit head-to-toe with cowboy boots. Students participated in a multi-round voting process on Instagram, casting votes for their favorite staff member’s spirit week outfit in each round, and Profe Lundberg led decisively throughout.

In an interview with The Navigator, Lundberg spoke about her outfit choices for the week. “I have three teens, and my daughter picked out my outfits for some of the days. I think they thought it was funny, and so it was kind of a fun unplanned thing to do throughout the week. It was fun, and I like bringing joy into the classroom and getting involved,” she said.

Lundberg’s life before teaching was very eventful. She lived in Spain for nine years, which helped her with her current job as a Spanish teacher. She really enjoyed learning new things from a different perspective and learning the language. But before she was a teacher, she worked on a cruise ship as a stewardess, which influenced her personality and helped her connect more with students in a fun and engaging way.

“I think that I’m kind of young at heart, and I like connecting with the students here. I enjoy the enthusiasm and the laughter that students at Southwest have, and I try to find balance between fun and learning,” Lundberg said.

Going from a cruise ship stewardess to a Spanish teacher seems like a stark change. Lundberg discussed how teaching might seem boring compared to traveling the world on a cruise ship, but she has found joy in an entirely new career.

One fun fact that most students don’t know about Lundberg is that she has a twin sister, and many times, students mistake her twin for Lundberg. They look so alike that it isn’t uncommon for a student to say hello, only to realize it was Lundberg’s twin all along.

Lundberg’s spirit week outfits were a highlight for students and staff, showing her commitment to trying to bring laughter and spark conversations with her students. From cruise ships to classrooms, Profe Lundberg keeps bringing the energy inside and outside the classroom.
