Southwest has recently opened up a storage area called the Laker Locker. It is free for students who need some of the basic necessities to ensure that everyone has what they need this winter. The organizers of the locker are Admin TOSA Amy Engler and Assistant Principal Megan Rangel. They told The Navigator that “the purpose of the Laker Locker is to ensure that every student’s physical and mental well-being is addressed as an integral part of their education.”
You can find it open before school, during lunch, and after school. Usually, either Engler or Rangel will help you find what you are looking for. However, if you see the door open, you are welcome to grab whatever you need. The room is W105.
Some things you can find in The Laker Locker are clothes, snacks, school supplies, and basic hygiene or household items. They are accepting donations of items on their Amazon Wishlist, although if you have any suggestions or connections for items not on this list, see Rangel or Engler.
The impact it has made on the community is noticeable. It has helped everyone in the community, “from students who have needed winter coats to families that have needed more items as they just moved to the neighborhood,” Engler said. It has been a great way to help families that are struggling or if you just need something fast and easy to get.
